The Moon's Role: Why a Solar Eclipse Is a New-Moon Event

A solar eclipse can only happen at new moon — only then does the Moon stand between Earth and Sun. The reason there is no eclipse every month is the lunar orbit: it is tilted by about 5.1° against the plane of Earth's orbit (the ecliptic).
