Advantages of binoculars
Ready instantly — no setup, no alignment. Unbeatable for spontaneous observing on full moon or half moon evenings. Keeping both eyes open also makes observing more comfortable and less tiring.
You don't need a telescope to see lunar craters. A good pair of binoculars with 10× magnification and a 50mm aperture is enough for the major mountain ranges, the maria and crater rims — and it fits in any backpack.
For most beginners, a 10×50 binocular is the best start: enough magnification for lunar craters, still steady enough to hold by hand, and far cheaper than a telescope.
The selection is based on three criteria: optical quality in dim moonlight, ergonomic handling, and value for money for beginners and advanced observers.
10× magnification with a 50mm aperture is the classic for moon watching. Crater rims, the large maria and the Apennine mountains are all clearly visible.
More magnification for finer detail along the terminator. Porro prism designs often deliver better optics than roof prism models in the same price range.
From 10× magnification upwards, a tripod starts to pay off. A simple tripod adapter (around €10–15) holds any standard binocular steady — crucial for a sharp view of the Moon.
Magnification is not the only criterion. Too much magnification without a tripod produces a shaky, darker image.

10×50 is the classic because a 50mm aperture gathers enough light for bright moon phases and delivers enough sharpness for the most important structures — without a tripod. An adapter only starts to pay off from 12× upwards.

If you want to identify individual craters by name or compare lunar maps, an entry-level telescope (80–100mm aperture) will take you further. That is, however, a different level of commitment.
At full moon the lunar surface is lit head-on and craters almost disappear. At half moon (first and last quarter) the terminator casts the deepest shadows — and reveals the most detail.
Binoculars, a dark spot and today's date are all it takes. The rest comes with practice.
First quarter (7 days after new moon) — the Moon stands high in the evening sky and the terminator shows maximum crater detail. No tripod needed, and plenty of time to observe.
